CONTENT MARKETING TIPS FOR NEW WEBSITES
According to the Content Marketing Institute, Content Marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.
In simple terms, content marketing involves the ways or means you device to get the attention of members of the public. When new companies are established, especially those that deal in consumer goods, edible items, or products that are simply bought and used, and not put into the production of other goods and services; a strategy has to be put in place in order to ensure that members of the public are not only made aware of the product(s), but are also enticed into buying them.
There are usually two angles when it comes to this. The first angle is getting customers; the second angle is keeping customers. In this article, we are going to discuss on the best content marketing tips to help you gain new customers and keep your existing customers.
NB: Your customers are your readers.
For new websites, content marketing is all about getting your website out there and getting people familiar with the name such that whenever they Google search and your website pops up, they will choose to first visit your website before they try others. You also want them to be able to remember your website name, and sometimes even bookmark your page so that they can visit next time. There is no need for much talk here, let’s just get to the tips.

Tip 1: YOUR NAME, YOUR BRAND
Many new website owners are basically more bothered about their content that they usually forget that their name speaks volumes.
I have seen a lot of articles online that talk about content marketing and all of them skip this very fundamental fact. They all jump into giving over a hundred tips on how to market your content online.
Think about all the popular sites that you know. Except those ones that gained popularity because of a world changing event that they were involved in, the rest (which is over 80%, by the way) all have user-friendly and relatable names.
Unless you already have a product in real life, and it becomes necessary to use that same name for your website, it is imperative that you use the most relatable names that you can think of.
If you are starting a blog, then you might be tempted to use your name like Linda Ikeji did; or some other popular blogs in the country (if you are Nigerian).
However, it is essential that when you are creating a website, try as much as possible to use a name that resonates your product. If you are an information providing website, then maybe the word “info” should be in your name.
If you deal with health, then a word that is associated with health should be in your website name. Also, do not make the name too long. All these help people remember your site, and know what your site is principally about.

Tip 2: KNOW YOUR INDUSTRY
“Industry” here refers to your products. What do you offer? Is it news, reviews, how to… information? Are you into celebrities or politics or trends?
This helps you in deciding how best you should market your content. Some web or blog industries require you to make many posts a day, while others require just a few posts daily.
News, celebrities, politics, etc: all require many posts daily because their contents are usually short… as compared to websites that provide reviews.
Here, quality over quantity becomes the order of the day. Bringing original stories as they occur might be enough to get you regular readers if you are involved with the former. However, if you deal in the latter, then an in-depth analysis that shows that you did your homework might simply be enough for your readers.

Tip 3: USE PICTURES
In today’s world, pictures speak louder volumes than words on the internet. Ensure that your contents contain a few relevant pictures that your readers can relate with, but make sure that these images are well sized, to prevent your website from crawling, and the exhaustion of your readers’ data.
A review, a how to… guide or a step by step illustration, is usually better done with pictures. You can’t have a website that talks about exercises with no pictures. People will simply relate better if you have pictures for these kinds of content.
Tip 4: USE RELEVANT SHARE BUTTONS ON YOUR WEBSITE OR BLOG
Your website analytics should show you which of the social media get shared the most, and also which social media gets the most readers to visit your site.
There is no need putting 20 social media sharing options under every post. Just add the most relevant and productive ones.
If you discover that Face book gets you about 80% of your website traffic, and twitter gets you the remaining 20, then maybe you should try limiting the share buttons to just those two.
Sometimes, the many share buttons actually scare readers away from sharing. Nobody has time these days to scan through your pile of logos, in a bid to find which to share to.
However, if they see only a “share to Facebook” option below your post, there is a bigger likelihood that they would briskly click on it and move on to something else.

Tip 5: GET SOCIAL
When your tweets or posts are shared on social media, and the user adds a comment to it, you should try your best possible to reply.
A reply, however it is, brings your website to the people, and everybody wants to get associated with your posts because they feel a form of connection.
If you reply tweets and comments, then your regular readers who have been communicating with you on social media would not mind dropping comments on your site also.
Tip 6: EMPLOY QUALIFIED WRITERS
Owning a blog or website does not make you a good writer, unless your audience already loves your style of writing; however unprofessional it is. The truth is that people put more confidence in your posts if they are well written.
Tip 7: MAKE A TOP 10
Top ten lists have been an undying trend for years now and this is because it gives readers an angle to read your posts from. A top 10 can be on anything, but it has to be well researched so that your list does not look mediocre.
Tip 8: MAKE POST EVENTS REVIEW
Events occur every week, and thousands of people are usually interested in each of these events. A post event review simply involves giving a breakdown of how the event went down and your observations.
Celebrity news websites and blogs should always try to make a post event review of celebrity award shows, celebrity birthdays, etc.
This gives you more original content than simply the copy and paste attitude that has taken over the industry.

Tip 9: DID YOU KNOW/ DAILY TIPS
These should not ever be allowed to stay on your front page after their day of use.
TIP 10: CONTENT MARKETING IN CONTENT
You should advertise your other contents in your posts. Strategically plan your write-ups in a way that at intervals, you can chip in links for other related topics on your websites.
TIP 11: ORGANIZE YOUR ADVERTS
Your adverts should not come in after every 100 words. This easily gets readers tired. They should be able to read the content they visited your site to read without having to scroll down numerous times to avoid the adverts scattered all over the post.
Place your adverts on side bars, atop the post, below the post, and strategically inside the content. Do not dissuade your readers with your indiscipline.

Tip 12: TURN YOUR LISTS INTO SLIDES
Okay, I must confess, I have not really seen many Nigerian websites that use this, however, when you check out many foreign websites you will notice that after seeing the first tiny bit of content, you have to click on “next” to see the other bits.
This ensures that you stay on the websites and load the site couple of times before you leave. Also, this helps their advert placement, as they can advertise a new product on different pages, in the same content.
Tip 13: EXCLUSIVES
Weekly or monthly exclusive content written by your best writer(s) is something that would make your readers keep track of time, so that they can read your next exclusive. Also remember to put these exclusives under a special category so that whenever a reader reads one of them and is impressed, he can get easy access to the rest.
Tip 14: RESPOND TO ANOTHER WEBSITES’ POST
When another website makes a post about a topic that generates a lot of traffic, do not be afraid of making your own post in response to such.
Also, do not be afraid to take a completely antagonizing stance against that which the blog or website talked on. However, be diplomatic.
Tip 15: MAKE COMPARATIVE REVIEWS
Making comparative reviews of products in your niche is one sure way of getting the audience you need. If you deal in technology, then making a comparative review of phones in the same price range is not a bad idea.

Tip 16: VIDEOS
Videos are becoming the most popular trends on the internet these days, and with cheap data plans that have been made available by network providers in recent time, you shouldn’t worry about whether people would be able to view these videos or not. You can make a personal video, where you talk about an issue or you give an instructional guide. Videos are very relatable and people can easily get a clearer understanding of what you are trying to pass across.
Other ways to do a good content marketing job include visiting other sites and finding out the kinds of topics they write on, using a paid third party converting site to gain more traffic, and getting topics that relate with personal life like things to avoid. Good luck with your website, and make some money off your hard work.
