ABOUT
University of Port Harcourt fondly called Uniport is a Federal Government owned degree awarding institution located in the heart of oil-rich city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Uniport was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt but was given full university status in 1977. The motto of University of Port Harcourt is Enlightenment and self-reliance.

It is a Second Generation Nigerian University. The current student capacity of the school is in the range of 35,000 to 40,000. Also, the University originally started with six faculties, but has grown to faculties.

Note that Uniport initially started with schools system, but later changed to faculties in 1982. The 10 faculties in Uniport include Faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Engineering, Management Sciences, Health Sciences, Natural and Applied Science, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Agriculture.

Just like other Nigerian universities, Uniport has a Chancellor who is a ceremonial head and Vice Chancellor who oversees the daily activities of the University. Also, it has a senate made up senior lecturers, professors and others who make major decisions in the school.

The Vice Chancellor of the school is Prof. Ndowa Lale. Uniport also has a teaching hospital and the biggest in Rivers State. It is popularly called UPTH (University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital), and located along East West Road.
ACCREDITATION
Just like the license to operate the University has, all courses offered in University of Port Harcourt are fully accredited by National University Commission (NUC).

The last visit by a team National University Commission officials to inspect the pharmacy department was in 2014. And as was expected, the University met all the requirements for offering the course in Nigeria. NUC team was led by Professor Cecillia Igwillo of University of Lagos.

Uniport provides hostel accommodation at a fee for its students. The school fee in University of Port Harcourt is N36, 000 for freshmen. Note that this figure is subject to review without prior information of the general public.

Please note that candidates who are legible for hostel accommodation are those whose admission status has been confirmed. They will have to proceed to the portal to do online application of hostel slots.

RANKING
University of Port Harcourt has been ranked by both local and foreign rating bodies. And in such rankings, it always fares well.

One of such ranking is the one done by Webometrics. University of Port Harcourt did so well in ranking amongst Nigerian and African universities in general and this is occasioned by the sincere commitment of the school authorities to the infrastructural, academic, moral, workshop and research development of the institution.

In the ranking, Uniport took 5th position in Nigeria, 36th in Africa and 3,129th in the world.

 

POSTGRADUATE COURSES
Uniport offers courses in Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree and Doctorate of Philosophy levels.

Listed below are the common requirements for these programmes:
Post Graduate Diploma: Interested candidates must have 5 Credit passes in O’ Level (including English Language) and any other relate subjects in their courses of choice in the University.

Higher National Diploma (HND) from a recognized polytechnic.

Candidates with BSC from University of Port Harcourt or any other university recognized by the school senate will be considered.

Also, Finals of ICAN, ACA, ACCA, ACIS, etc and other professional bodies may be accepted.
Master’s Degree: Candidates interested in doing MBA or MSC in Uniport must have 5 Credit passes in O’ Level (including English Language) and any other relate subjects in their courses of choice in the University and are expected to have completed their compulsory NYSC.

A second class honours BSC with at least 3.00 on a scale of 5.00 from University of Port Harcourt or a recognized university. A PGD (3.50 CGPA or more) from any recognized university and HND
Directorate of Philosophy: All interested candidates must possess a Master’s Degree from a recognized university with a CPGA of not less than 3.50 on a scale of 5.00 and/or 60% minimum average score.

But in English Studies, an applicant must have 4.00 and above on a scale of 5.00. And finally, any other qualification approved by school senate.
General Notices:

i. Candidates may be allowed to defer their admission for 1 year if they have good reasons for doing so on the recommendation of Director UPBS. Such candidate is expected to pay a deferment fee of N20,000 only.

The maximum period deferment in University of Port Harcourt is allowed is one year
ii. Students who fall into late registration category will be fined N50,000
iii. Students shall not be allowed into classroom without paying their school fees
iv. All candidates for MBA must have a minimum of 3 years’ work experiences and must have demonstrated adequate intellectual capacity and professionalism
V. Holders of HND are not qualified for it MBA/MSC

GRADING SYSTEM
Just like many Nigerian universities, Uniport uses the NUC standard for grading its students.

This means that for NUC programmes, grading is done on a scale of 5.00.

The rundown is shown below:
First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)
Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)
Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)
Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50).
Notice that NUC has since abolished the Pass Grade in Nigerian universities. This means that any student who scores below 45 in exam is assumed to have failed it.

 

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
All prospective UTME candidates who made University of Port Harcourt their first choice must compulsorily sit for their Post UTME screening test before they are considered for admission.

Candidates from UTME must score 180 and above (depending on the department of choice). Please note that these scores are subject to change from time to time.

And to be considered for admission, all candidates must have 5 Credit passes in English Language and subjects relevant to their course of choice in not more than 2 sittings.

Also, candidates must score at least 40% (not fixed) from the Post UTME test University of Port Harcourt. Note that you must score 200 and above from UTME if you chose Management Science, Nursing, Social Science, Pharmacy, Engineering (Except Civil and Environmental), and Dentistry.

The rest of the faculties take 180.

Furthermore, Direct Entry candidates must hold 5 Credit passes in O’ Level including English Language in not more than 2 sittings with OND, NCE, HND, etc. candidates who applied for it will be given an exam to take by the authorities of the University.

The University also allows students from other institutions to be transferred to it. These students must meet compulsory requirements approved by the senate.

Final selection of candidates will be based on selection among best screening result and certificates.
DURATION OF STUDIES
University of Port Harcourt uses the standard of 6-3-3-4 system of education in Nigeria, which means undergraduates spend at least 4 years doing a program in the University. This means undergraduates (except Direct Entry candidates) spend a minimum of 4 years in school.

Also, all other courses offered at University of Port Harcourt follow this schedule of 4 years (where a student does not have an extra semester), but there are variations in courses like Law, Pharmacy, Engineering, etc. (which require 5 years), and Medicine and Surgery (7 depending on school calendar and postings of University of Port Harcourt).
TRANSCRIPTS
Alumni of University of Port Harcourt may decide to visit the school and request for their transcript.

But as part of continued efforts to serve alumni of the University better, the management has approved an electronic platform where people can place order of transcript on ETX-NG Network.

This enables all ordered transcripts to be sent electronically to the schools were they are needed. Thus, alumnus of the University doesn’t have to visit the school and queue up for their transcript.
