About NMU

Nigeria Maritime University, founded in 2012, Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko is a non-profit public higher education institution located in Okerenkoko, Delta state. Officially recognized by the National Universities Commission of Nigeria, Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko (NMU) is a coeducational Nigerian higher education institution. Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko (NMU) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor’s degrees in several areas of study. The university has a regimentation unit with its first Chief Cadet Captain (Emperor D.O. Alagoa). Nigeria Maritime University is the first military university and maritime college in Nigeria and West Africa.[2] In February 2018 NUC (Nigeria University Commission)gave the approval to commence degree program in the University.  Objectives/Roles OF NMU

1.  To encourage the advancement of knowledge in the maritime sector and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex, or political conviction the opportunity of acquiring higher education in maritime technology and allied fields. Npower Recruitment
2.  To provide courses of instruction and training leading to the award of degrees, diplomas, and certificates in fields of maritime training /industry.
3. To encourage scholarship and to conduct research in all fields related to the maritime industry.
4. To develop infrastructure and facilities for the design and production of maritime vessels and equipment.
5. To relate the activities of the University to the social and economic needs of Nigeria.
6. To undertake any other activities appropriate for a maritime institution.

Notable Achievements of NMU

• Take-off of the Nigerian Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Delta State. The University was granted approval in January 2018 by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence undergraduate degree programmes effective 2017/18 session and commenced academic activities on April 12, 2018.

• President Buhari had last year approved an increase in the take-off grant allocated to the Maritime University from the N2 billion earlier announced, to N5 billion. Similarly, in November 2017, an additional N1 billion was approved by the President to support essential infrastructure works and staff recruitment in the University.

• Setting aside of US$170m seed funding for the Ogoni Clean Up, in an Escrow Account established for that purpose. The Escrow Agreement Signing Ceremony took place in April 2018.Waec Result

• Approval by President Buhari of an additional N35 billion for the 2016 budget of the Presidential Amnesty Programme See How Africa Cup of Nations will affect Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal

• Approval for the establishment of Modular Refineries across the nine states of the Niger Delta – the first two Refineries are already under construction and will be completed by the end of 2018.

• Resumption of construction work on abandoned projects across the Niger Delta, including the all-important East-West Road.

 Challenges Facing NMU

The following are some of the challenges facing NMU.

1: There is a need for a lot of investment in the training and development of maritime professionals. Haulage and Storage Services (Warehousing): As an industry, we must adapt to changes and develop in sync with shifts in the broader trade and logistics ecosystem.

2: Ports are now much more than transit points. They provide added value for which there is a real demand, such as the processing of products, financial breaks in free trade zones, specialized packing methods etc. Supply chain logistics (transport of raw materials usually in bulk) accounts for two-thirds of shipping traffic while distributing logistics (manufactured products usually transported in containers) account for the third. The Haulage business provides a lot of opportunities. Also establishing warehouses or distribution houses outside the Ports would help reduce business costs. Marine Renewable Energy, Storage, and Services: Marine Renewable Energy (wind, current, tidal, wave, and ocean thermal energy) is the world’s second-largest maritime zone. 3: Congestion around the Port has become a big challenge and therefore requires urgent action from the government. Also, they should provide more truck holding bays or garages to contain the trucks and tankers coming to the Ports.

4: Ports are no longer the leading container Ports in West Africa. Port of Lome, Togo has overtaken Nigeria due to modern reforms it had, thereby tripling its capacity from 311,500 containers in 2013 to 1.1 million in 2017 with depth of 16.60 meters. It is the only deep-water port in the West African coast that can accommodate 3rd generation ships. Its huge success is also due to the commissioning of its Container Terminal (LCT).

5: the over-reliance on Lagos ports by shippers.

6: Majority of Nigerians use one or more products that passed the Ports directly or indirectly, confirmation of the importance of our Ports. However, congestion and traffic gridlock (scenarios associated with delays, queuing and extra time of voyage and dwell time of ships, delayed cargoes at the port) adversely affect it, thereby having unpleasant consequences on Port Logistics and supply chains. These issues often escalate into extra costs, insecurity, safety, loss of trade, disruption of trade and transport agreements, making our Ports unattractive.
