Before we go on…
What is a State University?
State Universities are established by the State Government of Nigeria to meet the various educational need of the state. In Nigeria, there are State Universities of Technology, State Universities of Agriculture and State Universities of Education.
Many State Universities have substantial income from tuition and fees, donations (such as from alumni or philanthropists), and revenue from royalties.
Like the Federal universities in Nigeria, All the State Universities in Nigeria are regulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The_NUC oversees everything related to course accreditation and general regulations. The NUC ensures there is uniformity in standards among the universities in Nigeria and sets the admissions capacity of every university in Nigeria.
Advantages of State Universities
As I mentioned earlier, State universities in Nigeria are affordable but second to Federal universities. They are characterised by cheaper tuition fees, moderate levels of expenses. One reason why the school fees in state universities are low is that the State Government is subsidising tuition fees thus making them affordable for students.
Admission Process in State Universities
Because of these advantages, admissions into State Universities in Nigeria becomes very competitive.
Like other universities, admission into first degree programmes in State Universities is done through Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB.
JAMB conducts Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exam (UTME) to determine the ranking eligibility for admission. Candidates need to score high in UTME to stand a chance of getting admission.
After the UTME, some state universities do conduct post-utme exams to screen the candidates and select eligible ones for admission after also considering their O’Level results (WASSCE,_NECO, NABTEB). jamb result checker
State universities also admit students into various programmes via direct entry. Direct entry admission is for students who have at least A’level certification, OND, NCE, HND or degree.
State universities in Nigeria also offer various postgraduate programmes and award different kinds of training and certifications. The aim of State Universities is to provide trained manpower to improve the Nigerian economy.
