Permanent Residence for Caregivers

The Home Support Worker Pilot and Home Child Care Provider Pilot programs have begun accepting applications for permanent residency in Canada from immigrants on June 18th, 2019.

To be eligible to apply through these programs, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must meet the eligibility criteria set by Immigrants Refugees Citizenship Canada.
  • You must have a genuine job offer from an eligible employer in Canada.

You can obtain an occupation-specific work permit through these programs, which will allow you to work temporarily as a foreign worker in a Canadian province.

This work permit is restricted to a specific occupation and does not require a Labor Market Impact Assessment. With this visa, you can work and gain the Canadian work experience needed to apply for permanent residency.

Live-in Caregiver Program

The Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) is not currently accepting any application submissions. However, if you have at least two years of qualifying work experience through this program, you can apply for Canadian permanent residency.

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be working in Canada with an LCP work permit.
  • Your LCP work permit was approved based on a Labor Market Impact Assessment.

You can work as a caregiver in a Canadian province on a temporary basis if you are not eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada through the relevant program.

If you are applying for a new work permit as a caregiver, your application will not be processed if any of the following apply:

  • You are submitting your application from outside of Canada.
  • Your application is submitted through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
  • You are currently employed outside of Canada.
  • Your employer has applied for a Labor Market Impact Assessment after June 18th, 2019.

However, you can apply for a work permit to work as a temporary foreign worker in Canada under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program if you meet the following conditions:

The Caring for Children Program was closed on June 18, 2019, by the Canadian government. If your application was submitted before this date, it will still be processed. If you have previous experience caring for children in Canada, you may be eligible for permanent residency under the Home Child Care Provider Pilot.

Program 2: People with High

Medical Needs Care The Care for People with High Medical Needs Program was discontinued by the Canadian federal government on June 18, 2019. If your application was submitted prior to this date, it will still be processed. Program 3: Interim Pathway for Caregivers

The Interim Pathway for Caregivers was closed to new applications by the Canadian government on October 8, 2019. If your application was completed and submitted prior to this date, it will still be processed.

The Canadian government has introduced other programs such as Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs to assist those immigrating to Canada in obtaining permanent residency and citizenship.

Special programs are also available for international students, foreign workers, temporary residents, and skilled workers under the Provincial Nominee Program.
