In this article, my work is to give full list of private universities in Nigeria, and I will do just that. But my concentration will be on the full list of private universities in Nigeria as released by the Nigerian Union of Universities NUC recently with their Vice Chancellors, and possibly with their individual university’s website, should anybody want to know more about these schools. What is a Private University?
Private Universities are established by individuals, NGOs or corporate organisations both for the purpose of meeting various educational needs and for profit. In Nigeria, there are Private Universities of Medicine, Private Universities of Technology, Private Universities of Agriculture and Private Universities of Education.
Many private Universities have substantial income from tuition and fees, donations (such as from alumni or philanthropists), and revenue from royalties.
Like the Federal and State Universitoes, All the Private Universities in Nigeria are regulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The_NUC oversees everything related to course accreditation and general regulations. The NUC ensures there is uniformity in standards among the universities in Nigeria and sets the admissions capacity of every university in Nigeria.
Advantages of Private Universities
Private universities in Nigeria are the most expensive. They are characterised by higher tuition fees, high levels of expenses. One advantage is the ease of getting admission. If you have the money, simply apply for admission in any of the private school and offer your course of choice and your chances of getting admitted is high.
Admission Process in State Universities
Because of high tuition and other fee, admissions into Private Universities in Nigeria are less competitive.
Like other universities, admission into first degree programmes in Private Universities is also done through Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB.
JAMB conducts Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exam (UTME) to determine the ranking eligibility for admission. Candidates need to score high in UTME to stand a chance of getting admission.
After the UTME, some state universities do conduct post-utme exams to screen the candidates and select eligible ones for admission after also considering their O’Level results (WASSCE,_NECO, NABTEB). jamb result checker
Private universities also admit students into various programmes via direct entry. Direct entry admission is for students who have at least A’level certification, OND, NCE, HND or degree.
Private universities in Nigeria also offer various postgraduate programmes and award different kinds of training and certifications. The aim of State Universities is to provide trained manpower to improve the Nigerian economy.
