He was born on the 9th of October 1986 in Enugu State and is a native of Anambra State all in the eastern region of Nigeria. He is a graduate of the institute of management and technology Enugu, where he studied public administration.

Phyno’s romance with music began while he was in secondary school where he played the piano, drums and often found himself creating his own version of every song he heard.

Phyno Music Career 

The passion for music was so strong that it overshadowed his desires of becoming a medical doctor or a pilot. His stage name Phyno is coined from the word Phenomenal and was given to him by his high school friend.

He started singing in Enugu in 2003 but relocated to Lagos (the hub of Nigerian entertainment) between 2007 /8 and begin to work on launching his career officially.

He started out in Lagos as a producer by producing for 2shotz, Jmartins, Timaya, Flavor and Ruggedman amongst others.

In 2012, he started recording his debut album titled “No Guts, No Glory”. It featured Omawumi, Efa, Psquare, M.I, IcePrince, Flavour, Timaya and few others.

The album’s first lead single “Ghost Mode” which was his breakthrough single featured Olamide, the second single” Man of the year’ was released in 2013.

Both singles gained much acclaim and their videos gained much views on YouTube. The video for “Man of the year” was shot by Clarence Peters and it featured Illbliss, it was however banned shortly after by the Nigerian broadcasting corporation alongside other music videos by different artists.

In October 2015, Phyno released the album’s third and fourth singles titled “Parcel” and “O set” which featured Psquare with a video directed by Jude Engees Okoye.

Another record breaking single titled “Alobam” was released as a tribute to his colleagues in the industry who had been there before him like Psquare, Ice Prince, J Martins and Flavour. The entire album was released on the 4th of March 2014 to the delight of fans.

The album was a fusion of Igbo rap, Igbo highlife and afro beat that received a lot of positive reactions from critics and fans.

The rapper whose selling point is his lyrical depth and ability to rap in Igbo is one of the first authentic igbo artist to remain at the peak of his game after coming to limelight.

Apart from his ability to rap in Igbo, his combination of English and Nigerian pidgin to the flow gives his sounds and edge that leaves fans longing for more.

In 2015, he collaborated with fellow rapper Olamide, with whom he has maintained a professional chemistry and friendship over the years to work on a collaborative Hip Hop studio album titled “2Kings”.

The album received good reviews from lovers of rap music who are quite difficult to please. Critics described it as a classic battle Axe and a commendable piece of art.

He released a few more singles like “Authentic” and “Yayo” before the birth of his sophomore album in 2016 .

Tooxclusive a music site and blog described the album titled “Playmaker” as the best thing recorded that year in the history of Nigerian music industry. With the album, the rapper continued to woe his fans with his artistry in rap and with his lyrical skills.

The 20 tracked album had no boring single as it journeys through eastern highlife that communicates the reality of life, women, love, aspirations, introspection and sounds.

It featured the likes of veteran singer Onyeka Onwenu, M.I Abaga, Burna Boy,Olamide, 2baba, Flavor, Mr Eazi and Zoro. It had favorites which included “Financial Woman” featuring Psquare, “E sure for me”, Pino Pino”, Connect and “Fada Fada” which remains a big hit till date.

Critics rated the ‘Playmaker” album as a smoking hot piece of work. Phyno who is currently owns his own label Pentanuze music and was signed to sputnet records has successfully carved a niche himself as an indigenous rapper who has no competition as he sits in his throne as king of Igbo rap and has never fallen below par on any of his musical project.

CONTROVERSY

In 2014, it was alleged that Phyno had impregnated a lady called Edmonds but the allegations turned out to be false. He has also been engaged in an online feud with Hush puppi a Malaysian based Nigerian internet sensation, after the latter accused phyno of wearing fake jewelry.
