PDP insists on declaring 26 defected Rivers lawmakers’ seats vacant

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has maintained a firm stance regarding the status of the 26 Rivers House of Assembly lawmakers who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to the PDP, these lawmakers are no longer considered members of the state legislature following their departure from the party.

This position was reiterated by PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, who spoke to newsmen after the adjournment of the embattled lawmakers’ suit by Justice Donatus Okorowo of a Federal High Court in Abuja until January 24, 2024.JAMB Portal

Ajibade highlighted that despite the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the dispute between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, the PDP’s standpoint is based on the constitutional provisions regarding party defection. The Nigerian Constitution has specific clauses that address the issue of lawmakers defecting from the parties on whose platforms they were elected, often leading to legal and political disputes.

The PDP’s insistence on this matter underscores the legal complexities and political ramifications of party defections in the Nigerian political landscape. This issue, along with the ongoing court case, reflects the broader challenges and dynamics of party politics and legislative representation in Nigeria.JAMB Result
