The Nigerian police force is the principal law enforcement agency in Nigeria, first established in 1820 with Commissioner General Colonel KK being the first person to attain the highest rank in all the police but the Nigerian Police Force currently operating in the country was established in 1930.
The NPF has a staff strength of 371, 800 with plans to increase it to 650,000 by adding new recruits. It consist of 36 state commands which is grouped into 12 zones and 7 administrative organs. It is also currently headed by IGP Ibrahim Kpotun Idris.
The Nigerian Police Force has its headquarters at Louis Edet House, Abuja. So named because Louis Edet was the first Inspector General of Police within a period of 1964-1966.
Functions of the NPF
The NPF performed conventional police functions and was responsible for internal security. It offers support to the prison, immigration and customs services. They also offer protection to top organisations like banks and finance offices within organisations.
They also perform military duties within or outside Nigeria as directed.
