David Oladapo Oyebanjo who is popularly known by his moniker D’banj is one of Nigeria’s biggest entertainer who needs little or no introduction. We are happy to feature him on Information Guide in Nigeria Website.
Apart from D’banj, he has also adopted different stage names at different points or level of his career; Koko Master, Banger Lee derived from his days at the Lee temple in 2013, Koko Farmer and Eja Nla,(in 2012) which means big fish in Yoruba language.
He is the only entertainer with the most stage names. He was born on 9th of June, 1980 in Zaria, Kaduna state to a top military officer and an entrepreneur mother both from Ogun state, south western Nigeria.
D’Banj Education and Early Life
Born: 9 June 1980, Dbanj attended the Nigerian military school in Zaria before proceeding to the Lagos state university to study mechanical engineering but withdrew due to incessant strikes and left for the united kingdom where he met Don Jazzy in 2001 and delved fully into music.
He thought he was going to end up as military man just like his father but his love for music overshadowed that aspiration.
D’Banj Music Career
At the age of eleven, he started playing drums in the elite drum corporation of the Nigerian army while at music school; his late brother who died in a plane crash in 1994, introduced him to the harmonica which he kept playing till he was better at it.
He later joined the choir and played every instrument he could lay his hands on, at this point everything changed for him musically as he began to use every little opportunity he was given to express himself through music.
Back at the United Kingdom he joined Don Jazzy to work on music while doing menial jobs to survive, they both returned to Lagos in 2004 and continued making good music.
Together, they built one of Africa’s finest and most successful record labels the “Mo Hits Records” under which they signed Wande Coal, D’Prince and Dr. Sid. Dbanj recorded his first single “Tongolo” ( what is the koko) in that same year they returned and the single was the genesis behind the name “Koko master”.
In 2015, he collaborated with several artists and released his debut album “No Long Thing” which had the previously released single “Tongolo” as a breakthrough single; another famous single “Koko” was used as a campaign song by the people’s Democratic party, the then ruling party in Nigeria for the 2007 general elections.
In 2006, he released his second album “Rundown funk you up” which had “why me” as a massive hit.

D’ banj whose genre of music is a combination of afro beat as inspired by the late Fela Kuti) and the new school afro pop is undoubtedly Nigeria’s biggest music export and one of the most commercially successful artist.
This profile guaranteed him an interview with BET in 2011, this was an opportunity for him to launch himself to the international music scene he had aspiring to work with at that time, after the interview he met Kanye West n Dubai and introduced himself to him in a brief conversation that led to him being signed up by Kanye West’s good music in June that year.
Shortly after this, he parted ways with his long time friend and partner Don Jazzy after irreconcilable differences. This was one feud that shook the Nigeria music industry.
Mo Hits records died and Don jazzy birthed a new label “Mavin Records” that had everyone from the defunct Mo Hits except Dbanj and additional artists like Tiwa Savage. D’banj on the other hand went ahead to create his own DB records which is home to Kswitch (his brother), and 2kriss.
