A beverage or a drink as it is popularly called in the country is simply a drinkable liquid that is not water. There are basically two types of beverages which are Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic beverages.

Alcoholic beverages are drinks that contain at least 0.5 – 75% alcohol. They are produced by the introduction of yeast for fermentation into substances such as Grapes, Grains, Barley, Fruits, Sugarcane and Rice. Examples of Alcoholic beverages are Wine, Champagne, Beer, Whiskey, Brandy, liquor, etc.

Non-Alcoholic beverages are drinks that do not contain any form of intoxicating substance, they are mostly sweet carbonated drinks and stimulants. They are also known as soft drinks which comes in different variations such as mineral water, juices, squashes, syrups, smoothies, shakes, etc.

1. Beer

Beer is one of the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the country today. It is said to be the third most popular drink overall after water and tea in the world today.

Beer is brewed from cereal grains most commonly from malted barley, however, wheat, corn, and rice are also used.

The brewing process involves fermentation of the starch sugars in the materials which produce ethanol and carbonation in the resulting beer. Some brewery go-ahead to add hops which add bitterness and other flavors that act as a natural preservative and stabilizing agent.

In the country today we have many brands that the people can choose from for example Gulder, Star, Heineken, and so on. These products are packaged in bottles and cans to the taste of the consumers and are preferred chilled.

A soft drink or mineral as it is popularly called in Nigeria is a drink that contains carbonated water, sweetener, and a natural or artificial flavoring. It is normally non-alcoholic and comes in many forms ranging from regular to low-calorie, no-calorie, caffeinated and caffeine-free drinks.

Tea is an aromatic beverage that is prepared by adding hot or boiling water over cured leaves which is said to come from Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to East Asia.

It is normally processed and packaged in small tea bags that make it easy for one to use. There are different kinds of tea, for example; Green tea, Herbal tea, Black tea, Yellow tea, Fermented tea and so on.

11. Chapman:

A Chapman is a non-alcoholic drink normally referred to as a cocktail drink. It is a mix of fanta, sprite, lemon, cucumber, grenadine and angostura bitters, and these mixtures gives it a red coloring and are traditionally served in a glass cup with ice and few slices of cucumber placed at the tip of the glass cup.

12. Zobo:

13. Kunu:

Kunu, also known as kunuzaki is a popular drink consumed throughout Nigeria, especially in the north. It is usually made from a grain such as millet, although corn can be used as well.

It comes out whitish in colour after the whole process. It is made by first allowing the grain seeds to germinate, and then the seeds are soaked in water for a few days after which it is blended together with sweet potatoes and ginger or pepper to form a smooth paste.

This paste is then divided into two parts. One part is first poured into a pot with boiling water poured on it, it is stirred until a thick mixture is gotten, then the other part is poured into the pot too and is stirred some more till the desired texture is formed.

The mixture is then left for a day or two for the grain husk to settle. After this, the husk and other sediment are filtered out of the mixture, and the filtered liquid is bottled for consumption.

It is better served chilled. There are other types of kunu such as Kunu Aya which is made from tiger nuts also known as Hausa coconut. These drinks are very nutritious and healthy for consumption and it is very affordable as a bottle can be gotten for ₦50. The price also depends on the quantity.

14. Brandy:

Brandy is a spirit produced by distilling wine which generally contains 35–60% alcohol by volume and is typically drunk after the day’s activity or most times offered to guests.

Varieties of brandy can be found across the winemaking world, they differ based on the flavor used and its colour is mostly caramel and cost as much as ₦500 per bottle, the prices are based on the quality and brand. A popular brand is Hennessy.

15. Whisky:

While brandy is generally made from grapes, that is, any distilled liquor made from fermented fruit juice is called brandy. Whiskey is made from grain, typically malted barley, corn, or other cereal grains, which is essentially brewed and fermented into beer.

As the name implies, they are beverages that tend to provide mental and physical stimulation. It contains sugar and stimulant compounds, usually caffeine.

They may or may not be carbonated and may also contain other sweeteners, herbal extracts, and amino acids. They are just a subset of a larger group of energy products and are different from sports drinks.

16. CHAMPAGNE:

This is also known as sparkling wine due to its sparkling nature. It derives its name ‘Champagne’ from its place of production which is the Champagne region of France.

It is produced from grapes which goes through secondary fermentation of the wine in the bottle to create carbonation. The process of production is quite unique from that of normal wine, it requires specific vineyard practices, sourcing of grapes exclusively from specific parcels in the Champagne regions and specific pressing regimes unique to the region.

19. LOCAL GIN:

It goes by many names but it is popularly known as ‘ogogoro’. It is an alcoholic beverage that is distilled from palm wine. It is known due to its cultural significance in many parts of the country as people use it for ceremonies and other cultural events.

However, when not properly brewed can become dangerous to the health. It is produced by boiling the sap to form steam, which subsequently condenses and is collected for consumption.

20. FURA DA NONO:

This is a nutritional drink mostly patronized by northerners as its origin is from a tribe called the Fulani’s in Nigeria. It is made from fermented milk and ground millet grains and is thick but not as thick as yoghurt.

This drink is traditionally served in a round calabash bowl and eaten with a wooden ladle. The fura which is the millet is moulded into balls which the nono is natural cow milk. One can get this drink for as low as ₦100 depending on the quantity you request for.
